Selling on Gumtree
« on: February 18, 2022, 06:01:24 am »
Hey All,
I’ve recently used Gumtree to clear out a few things no longer required.
I moved a few things without trouble, the people were very good to deal with using cash and bank transfer.
But there was one bloke doing some fishing!
He kept asking for bank details but would not give me his details, address.
I smelt something fishy very early on.
I’ve since removed the rest of the items from Gumtree.
I’ll probably put some back on later.
Just be careful, next time I’ll say cash or PayPal only.
It’s a shame some people ruin it for the genuine!
Cheers Phil.

Hi Phil,

Yes, there seems to be more bad people out there everyday.

In future I'd suggest setting up PayID on your bank account. You can link it to either your mobile phone number or email address (I'd suggest using mobile phone number).  All major banks in Australia support this - it is called an 'Osko' payment, and is part of the NPP (New Payment Platform).

Then all you have to do is ask them to make the payment to your phone number - when they set up the payee in their online banking they use your mobile number (instead of your account and BSB) and the banks link it to your account details (so these details are hidden).

I have used it many times, including selling a car and caravan for several thousand each. As the transfer is in real-time between banks you can wait until you can see the money in your own bank account before releasing the goods. The car I sold was for $11.5K and the money appeared in my account within 30 seconds!

More info on it here - https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/online-banking/making-the-most/new-payments-platform/.  This is from Westpac, but you could Google search for 'Osko' and your own bank name and they will have more relevant info for you.

Cheers,
Shane

Had a payment done for some wheels this way last week.
I wasn’t up on how the payment worked but the buyer said it was all good.
He left with the wheels and the payment took 24hours to clear as I was a new payee.
Wasn’t sure if I had done my money or not until it cleared through.

Hi Brett - did they get you to register for PayID on the spot? It might take a bit of time for the banks to synchronise the Osko list, though I haven't experienced that kind of delay. It might be one particular bank being overly conservative (though they are not supposed to be).

Luckily it did work, and I expect all your future payments will be instant.

Great info thanks.

Cheers Phil.

Ended up with my mobile registered to my account even though I didn’t know it had been.
Still took 24 hours though.
Don’t know if it was because of different bank brands.

Brett,

I had a look at all four of the big banks - and only CommBank puts a 24 hour delay on first time payments to a new payee "as a security measure", so I expect your buyer banked with them.  That'd be a pretty poor experience in my opinion given that a majority of payments will be to a new payee (e.g. you only buy a car from a person once generally).

If anyone is interested, here are the links for how to use PayID / Osko for each of the big four banks:
- Commbank - https://www.commbank.com.au/digital-banking/pay-id.html
- ANZ - https://www.anz.com.au/ways-to-bank/more/pay-id/
- NAB - https://www.nab.com.au/personal/customer-support/fast-payments
- Westpac - https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/online-banking/making-the-most/new-payments-platform/

I said wait up, I need photos, he sent photos of a repo unit front and incorrect year rear.
I used a web site called tineye it checks origin of photos and as you can guess found them on ebay ads in the US.
Googled his phone number an lots of people ripped off by the guy.
do your homework before divulging details or pay anyone
what disappointed me the most was the bloke is in Australia, expect it from some busted a..e country across the other side of the world but not here in Australia

Hey all,
I’m still looking at buying a Yamaha WR450F.
Gumtree are at least a grand or more overpriced, the best price for a 2017 (in beautiful condition) was from the local bike shop.
Cheers Phil.

PS, Wife still says No! I’m working on it.
I’ll just wait for her to buy something expensive and feel bad about it.
It always works.
I’ll get one!
Cheers Phil.
