71 MACH 1 RESTOMOD - DIFF REPLACEMENT
« on: January 15, 2022, 12:52:18 pm »
HI GUYS,

NEW MEMBER SEEKING LOCAL ADVICE:

I have a 1971 Mach 1 Restomod currently in the final build stages.
The 351 Cleveland is fine, transmission rebuilt but I now need to
sort the rear end out for running.
It is the original diff and axle but I would like to replace it with
something I can source locally.
I would appreciate any information or suggestions that will be
a relatively easy to fit to this old girl.
Thanks,
Mel

Hey Mel, welcome to the forum,

Of course it depends on you situation, Bank account etc.

If you going to such a large job consider going disc brake rear.

Ford Explorer brake package is very popular, they are disc brake with drum park brake.

This is what i have, in detail!

Differential markings - Standard 9" case should be C7AW-E.
Large bearing (New Type) known as the Torino bearing or " Set 20".
Differential ratio - 3.25:1
Strange Auburn Pro Series Differential 9" Ford With 31 Spline Axles.
Currie axles CE2020T

PARK BRAKE SHOES.
Ford Explorer UN UP UQ US 1996-2001
Minor park brake shoe 3218
Abex 6068-gg
Ford Original 6W1Z-2N712-A
Fitted Tora brand N1774 / FYE015054

BRAKE ROTORS.
Ford Explorer UN UP UQ US 1996-2001 brake rotors!
Rotor diameter - 285mm - OEM YL2Z-2C026-BA
Minor park brake diameter - 183mm
Centre hole - 71mm
Marked Bosch 2539203 & F57A2C026AA
Ford explorer brake rotor F57A2C026AA.

REAR BRAKE PADS.

This may help.

Cheers Phil.

Hi Mel,
there are so many kits out there these days that bolt directly onto your existing dif that its not funny . There really isnt any benefit in going some custom route by mix and matching gear.
Steph at custom Mustangs has quite a few kits listed
https://www.custommustangs.com.au/brakes-steering-suspension/brake-conversion-kits/conversion-kit-rear/
He also can advise what you may need to do with the master cylinder etc (Drum brakes usually have a residual valve that needs to be taken out when you convert rear drums to discs.
Steph also has a 71 mach 1 so will know what your looking at.
Regards
Mark
