Oil suitable for RRS power steering
« on: October 08, 2020, 12:07:55 pm »
Hey guys
Just installed an RRS power steering kit on my 65 Mustang and it has a bad shudder,  RRS recommend using the Penrite power steering fluid ESF001 but haven’t been able to source it and when trying to ring RRS not getting an answer.  Can anyone recommend another power steering fluid that has anti shudder additive

Cheers

Sally

I think its Penrite PSF001, not ESF001. The latter doesn't show up on the Penrite website.

All the normal places seem to stock it - Supercheap, Repco, Autobarn, or there are a couple of online places I've used before

Hi Sally,
I have RRS power steering on my 66. Did you install an RRS pump, or are you using your original pump? The power steering needs consistence fluid pressure to work smoothly, otherwise, you will get shudder as you describe.

Hi,  what pump are you running on yours? We have the old Saginaw pump so yes maybe that is the problem.  Can you tell me more about the pump you are using
Thank you. Sally

I actually installed a new RRS pump with mine. Cost an extra approx $700 but the RRS technician told me if your pump doesn’t put out consistent pressure, then the rack won’t operate smoothly.
A bit overpriced in my view with a cheap Ford style reservoir, which I have since replaced with a nice polished aluminium one.
I would get your pump pressure tested, it could be your problem.

I'm using the original pump with the RRS rack and have had no issues.

I had castrol powersteering fluid is my original system and it was noisy in the pump and glitchy in the control valve.
swapped to penrite, the pump is now almost silent and no more glitchy or squaky noise from the control valve.
