Is this true or correct ?
« on: September 17, 2019, 07:02:00 pm »
The new import laws coming out on the 10 th December I think ,hmm 10 th nov ? . All classic  imported  cars from that date will  only be able to have club rego ,no full rego  in any  state . Was also told if your classic car has club rego now after that date will not be able to get full rego from then on .  UNLESS the car has had full rego at some time ,then even tho it might be on club rego now you will be able to go back to full rego .  Anyone got better information on this ??? .

I tried to read the Gov website, not really clear... https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/import_options/pre1989scheme.aspx

Now what I was told the other day was all classic cars from that date 10 th dec I think it was ,they will only ever get club rego ,never full rego . Cars already here and on club rego and never had full rego will only ever get club rego . If your club car has had full rego once but now on club rego it will be able to get full rego again after that date as long as you can provide the proof it had full rego in Australia before .  I'm not 100% sure on any of this at this point and got my information from a QLD traffic branch  police  officer ,who also owns a classic mustang and he is restoring it  and was advised to get it registered ASAP on full rego 1st .   That's to his understanding  and the information he has been advised also . It's not far away is it .

What about a car that was imported years ago and has never been registered? i.e. neither club or full rego?

The information below is from someone from the CMC Council Of Motor Clubs

There was to be a new law legislated which limited the number of Grey Imports bought in by these small specialist import companies. This came about because of constant lobbying by the big car companies (Toyota etc.) because these smaller concerns are costing them sales.

It would have had no effect on private imports or vintage cars in any way. The new law was a Federal law & the club rego is controlled by the States, so there was no connection.

As it happens the new law has been deferred anyway.

You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the Duct Tape.

Hi all

I think we get fairly sensitive to regulation on our interests. Most important thing to remember is that the Federal Govt controls imports but the states control registrations and traffic legislation.

There is a thing called the national traffic legislation accord where all states agree to consistent legislation for traffic offences ie its an offence to use a mobile phone in all states etc.  However rego is very individual and the States are all very protective of that independence unless there is significant Commonweallth priority ie money or other concession attached to agreeing to the change.
So when we see something talking about registration but attached to import rules you need not be too alarmist.
If i wanted to import a Pro Touring build you might want to worry.
