today I went to check this '73 convertible...
engine sounds good and exhaust has a really good tone; I didn't noticed any smoke and/or strange noises. Car has not been turned on during the day.
Interior is pretty good overall, some marks around but not big.
Roof is working really well and it is in good condition (not ripped); by the way it is white...

Major concern is the paint, re-sprayed with closed door in the US. There are some marks and chips around, not big and acceptable for a daily driver car. Paint on the front bumper started to crack, and I saw what could be a couple of rust bubbles in bottom front of the quarter panel (on both side of the car); bubbles are around 1cm diameter and underneath the paint.
Engine bay re-sprayed black with everything in it, or it looks like that...
I've checked underneath the car and it seems ok, no major dramas as much as I could see.

Tyres are 9yrs old.

Only real issue sounds like those rust bubbles and a too common low grade paint job(looks good in the photos as usual).  The old tyres not an issue because those ugly Centrelines are going to be replaced with new wheels and BF Goodrich white lettered radials aren't they.  So what are you thinking Fred ?

Definitely rust bubbles are an issue. To be honest the paint is not that bad on the majority of the car (a part from front bumper, a couple of areas at the rear and the mentioned bottom of the quarter), it was done with closed doors so you will notice it, and there are some marks due to usage.
Tyres not an issue, they can be changed easily together with the rims.

Before making any decision I’ll probably have a chat with Big Al, he is literally around the corner from that car dealer.

Back in October I sent an offer for the copper convertible mentioned at the beginning of this conversation, not accepted and then sold to someone else a couple of weeks later.

Now I’m looking at this one: https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/magill/cars-vans-utes/1973-ford-mustang-classic-convertable-auto-v8-351-cleveland/1231505262

Is it from someone of the forum? Or does someone know the car?

I'm only  a couple of minutes away from that car Fred.

Kym Turner (SA tech officer) can do local inspections if you want one.

That’s good to know, thanks!

I think today or tomorrow I will call the owner of the car and ask a couple of questions, then I’ll consider an inspection.

Hi Fred,

This one looks fairly unmolested for the period we're talking about.  Like some of the options fitted to it even though they may not be factory fitted most look period correct right down to the air conditioning system.  Note these original A/C jobs, non vintage air fitment saps a lot of power when operating but work well enough if serviceable.

Hey Robster,
Yes, car seems genuine and the guy told me he has always maintained it. We also know that from pictures a lot of cars look amazing, then in reality they turn out to be not that amazing...

This week I try to understand a couple of things about registration in NSW, maybe I'll give the guy another call, and then I could consider to talk to SA people for an inspection (thanks again Dwayne for contact details).

Hey Fred,

I brought my 65 from the late Bob Janes brother Bill three years ago. He had a significant car collection and at the time I brought my 65 vert he also had a 65 GT vert with stick shift and a 73 vert that he said was something like 15K original miles car. By the look of the interior it could have been true. These cars where located in a warehouse in Moorabin Victoria at the time and sitting under plastic sheet covers. Not sure if they are still available but I do have his number and could txt him if you are interested. Only problem is he has plenty of $$ and wants his number and doesn't car if the cars sit and rot if he doesn't get it.

Anyway I am happy to shoot him a message if you want.

Cheers

Hi Mark,
Thanks, it would be great if you can send him a message to understand what he has and how much he wants.

Cheers

Unfortunately it is RHD, I’m not really a fan of converted cars. Thanks anyway to mention that.

Hey Fred,

Bill Jane responded this afternoon. The 65 GT is sold but he still has the the 73 Vert. Its a 14,000 odd mile car so you can image he is looking for some $$. He is happy for you to contact him. I'll PM his mobile number to you.

I'm still doing some investigation on the '73 red vert, just received more pictures. Apparently the door data tag has been lost, or more likely painted over during respray; VIN windscreen tag is still there.
Just in case I ordered a Marti report...

Like the features on this car Fred, but if the basics are flawed like a body covered in chicken wire and bog, then it’s a no-go zone.

Looks good but I think you’re careful enough to get it checked first.

I like it too, also one of my favourite colour combinations. Agree, if body is not as expected most probably I will pass it. For sure I'm not looking for perfection or concourse conditions, but I don't want to deal with bog or rust...

I'm waiting for the Marti report to understand how the car came out from the factory, then will see....

Sorry just picked on the fact it's got '69-'70 Mach 1 Corinthian weave style seats and not the period '71-'73 seats.  Neither here nor there, still looks great.  Just thought I would add that in out of interest.

Yes, I knew that. The guy mentioned that he changed the seats he got with the car (some leather newish high back seat) with the ones you see in the gumtree ad. He sent me some extra pictures that have the old seats.
Personally, if seats are in working order but not original, it is not a deal breaker... They can be changed with period correct ones at a later date
