I was reading this article about the Steve McQueen Mustang and was a bit puzzled when the owner of the car was describing the work that had been done to it. He states the it has the original limited slip differential, but I thought that didn't add up to me. I'm sure that in the car chase he misses a turn then backs up with heaps of axle hop and then lays rubber up the road with only one wheel doing it.
Just doesn't sound right to me.

Journalists don't always get things right but there were two cars, perhaps it was the stunt car doing that scene?

From the OP:

“As you know there were two original movie cars,” said Kiernan. “One was recently found in Mexico, that was a stunt car. The other one was actually the one your grandfather drove.”

Yeah OK, that makes sense that maybe the stunt double wouldn't be the same as Steve's car.

The plot thickens.....a quote from Hagerty Insurance regarding the authenticity of the Bullitt car  :-

"One of the key shots of the chase is when the Mustang overshoots one of the corners. McQueen’s character, Frank Bullitt, throws it in reverse and seemingly smokes the left rear tire while backing up. That smoke, however, was fed to the wheel well by a trunk-mounted smoke generator via a duct patched into the fender liner."

It also states the the stunt car was used for the jumps and McQueens car used for the driving scenes.

The magic of Hollywood; they should do a Mythbusters on that to see if it can be done, lol.

SXTY8 axle hop has nothing to do with an LSD diff and an LSD diff will spin one wheel like crazy unless it's brand new and on a even surface and is very  tight and never spun one wheel before . A LSD ford diff only has clutch packs  and  they are useless .

Sorry but I wasn't saying that the axle hop had anything to do with the diff. It just amused me to see the film highlighting a problem that comes with a bit of horsepower and leaf springs and wondering why they had to provide smoke artificially as you'd think a 390 that had been breathed on by a guru mechanic should be capable of doing it without any help. I would have thought that as a 68 model car in 1968, the diff would be new enough to provide traction to both wheels, but obviously it didn't.

Its funny how quick kids learn to drive a car, yet fail to understand a lawnmower.
