1965 fuel tank colour

Hi,

What was the original colour of the fuel tank in a '65 Mustang? The new one is just plain steel and I want to put a coat of something on it or else it will rust. Any recommendations?

It was plain galvanized steel.

Who'd you get the tank off?
If it's the canadian made ni-terne steel(spectra) ones that most companies sell it should hold up better than the original tanks. If it's the crappy looking one that one company in australia sells for quite cheap, be careful. I had both in my garage, I would never ever put the cheap in one after seeing it compared to the spectra tank. Even the welds were questionable.

It is Canadian made but it looks like plain steel to me, not galvanized

Is it a litte bit shiny? It should be ni-terne steel if it's made in canada. The other tanks almost like they are painted with crappy paint.
You can coat it if you want. The inside will probably corrode first anyway.

Yes it is shiny steel and definitely not painted. The welding also looks first class to me

Yeah definitely ni-terne. I was actually doing some reading and they do recommend painting it.

I think I might clear coat it then
