Mustang Cobra 2002 - The MISSING LINK

As I have a 2002 Mustang Cobra, I wanted new wheels to fit to my Mustang. I had to turn to our friends in the USA. I found a small company in Oklahama City called DH Designs. Local speed shop and accessories. He advertised a set of American made ROVOS rims for my model Mustang. Actually specifically designed to fill out the large wheel arch.

So after talking to the owner Colin AUSTIN, he set up a good deal for me to buy a set of 18 inch gloss black Rovos Durbans. 10 1/2" rears and 9" fronts. Big off set to fill those big rear guards without using wheel spacers.
 
Months later they arrived with help from Harry, from Harrys Classics in Sydney who has a depot in Orange, California where DH Designs trucked to.
I bought Yokohama 285/40/18 on rear and Nitto 245.40/18 on the front. Result: Bloody awesome. Absolute beast looking.

Colin from DH Designs on OKC could not believe he had sold a set of Rovos to a rare breed 2002 Mustang Cobra. Probably only Rovos set in Oz.

SO he decided to get as much info on the Aussie 2002 Mustang Cobra and write a thread to show Americans that the so called "missing link" 2002 Mustang DID EXIST.

So here is his thread on our rare 2002 Mustang Cobras. As you may see the True Blue Mustang in the many of the pics is mine where I purchased from Robert Taylor from NSW a few years ago. Absolute gem.

If you have one, hang on to it. Americans might give you a fair dollar for it.. :)

Well done Steve, and Thanks for this info and your effort in posting this.

I think both Jiffy, and myself better hang on to ours, as we have coupes, not convertibles, of which I believe only 30 Cobra coupes were produced in 2002 worldwide. I have just recently gone down a similar path to yourself with wheels. I opted for the 2003 Cobra wheels in silver/polished. 17x9 front with 275/40/17 tyres, and 17x10.5 rears with 315/35/17 tyres.
Absolutely stoked with the results. Although, Car needs to be a bit lower but the original exhaust scrapes on certain driveways. I'll attempt to post a couple of photos

Hi Big Al,

Your welcome. Combined effort with a few people assisting this thread. Yours is the sister to mine. Wanted a coupe but happy with my vert.

I lowered mine 2 inches which would be max for me. Sill have 100mm clearance.
Yours looks like a new paint job.  What else done to yours?
I need to replace a header gasket. Do you do them? I have the parts just need someone to do it.

I can do the gasket change for you.

As far as I am aware, it is mostly original paint apart from Front & Rear Bumpers, Bonnet, and I think R/H front guard has possibly had a repaint. It only has 73,000klms on it.  And yes, I plan to hang on to it for a fair while. I have also been contemplating starting a 2001/2002 Australian Ford Tickford Cobra Registry to keep a track on these rare cars. Are you interested?

Great article! And yes even the Americans cannot believe that there was actually an 02 Mustang Cobra produced.
There were in fact 32 Coupes and 68 Conv. made in the US and all 100 of them were sent to Australia to be converted to RHD by Tickford for Ford.

MYSNKE, where did you get you build figures from?.

Have seen 70 Coupes and 30 Convertibles quoted and whilst having lunch with SVT Owners Association members in Memphis a few years ago, I was told that 67 Coupes and 33 Convertibles were built.

Ford Special Vechiles website only states 100 2002's were built, but does not break it down any further.

Can anyone confirm exact Coupe/Convertible numbers for 2002?.

Yes I am interested. I have found a couple of other 2002 owners on my travels. Facebook ways. (Registry)
Will try and organise to bring over for the header gasket. Might have to wait a month or 2. Wife is having major surgery on her spine and I have to care for her and my daughter for a month or more. So will talk soon,
Any idea of price to do the gasket?

Is your exhaust stock? Shorty headers and usual 4 cats, H pipe and cat back?

I am thinking of taking all CATS off. So straight from headers to H pie and thru Flowmaster mufflers. They say (USA) its deeper and breaths more. Your thoughts?

Still trying to get days off during the week to come over to your shop.

I have had a 2001 Cobra since 2014. Replaced nearly every wearable part except motor and gearbox. Some parts in Australia most from USA. I used CJ Pony, American Muscle to name few. Postage is the killer and exchange rate. An importer to Australia like Harry's Classic's in Sydney etc.
Don't be put off if you like the model. They are a great model.
