out of curiosity, have any of you lads tried this mod? seems very popular in USA.

https://www.mustangdepot.com/graphics/pm-mini-tub.pdf

ive been playing with different tyre combos for street and strip.

M/T 255/50/16 - 26x10.5 on custom 16" rim, fits however touches the inner wheelhouse corner. with the above mod, should clear easy.

Simmons FR18 x 9" bead to bead and overall width 10" wide, currently has 235/40/18 fits well, will be putting on 265/35/18 semi slick tomorrow to see if i can get away with it.

car will have 4 Link setup.

You are going with the wrong tyre size . A 15 inch is best so the tyre side wall is taller so it can flex and twist .   For just street driving sure the others are fine but for the track the 15 .  Anyway it's up to you at the end of the day it's your car .

Ive got wilwoods on rear and won't clear a 15" ive tried a few different branded wheels hence the 16.

Might even be able to heat up that inner section and massage in

16 or 17 is ok as long as you go a tall side wall tyre . Traction is everything in drag racing with good HP .  You want around a 1.4 / 1.5 at worse  with your set up .

And ... my 66 body has already had the mod done at some stage.

Out of curiosity, I went to measure it up tonight to see how much I'll gain and found the inner wheelhouse is already level with the leaf springs.  Stripped off the sound deadener and sure enough the pie cut is there.

They haven't rolled the guards yet though, so will get around to that when I get to that end of the rebuild.

Does anybody have any experience with these mini tubs from Autoworks? I would like to fit 17x10's if I can and these say they can 18x10's and still keep back seats

Love to see some photos of that!

Love to see some photos of that!

I'll try to get out to get some better photo's over the weekend of the bare metal.

Looks pretty simple, just a 8" long slit opened up and patched (red triangle) and the lower patch section (yellow) that may have been done separately as a rust patch perhaps.

Hopefully will get to do some more measuring over the weekend to see if it's worth fitting the widened inner wheelhouses while the shell is already stripped and the dodgy rear quarters removed.  The leaf spring location seems to be the limiting factor with what can be stuffed in there, so new wheelhouses may be a total waste of time and money if max can be achieved by further massaging with a BFH.

My poor mans mini-tubs a much easier to see when it's stripped back to bare metal:

The springs are definitely my limiting factor now regarding how much rubber can be stuffed in there. The inner wheelhouse is vertical with the springs except for the small section just near the seat belt mount pictured.  This is the same spot Soaring's test wheel was rubbing when he was going through the process.

If you are planning on doing the mod, I'd try pushing this area 2cm further back so it's also in line with the springs at the front of the tyre.

I'd be interested to know if Soaring's car has the same slit cut to widen the front of the wheelhouses.

No mine is standard, but used the BFH approach to that area.
the 5" backspace is working well, and provides good clearance to the spring and front of wheel house,  but i did need to  aggressively roll the rear guards all the way around to avoid rubbing.
i think 5 1/4" MAY be a better fit.
I'm not allowed to spend money on my cars, but I can help you spend yours!

Thanks, I'll be massaging that area a little more while it's stripped down.

My cuts are along the inner/outer wheelhouse join, whereas the instructions show the cut further into the inner wheelhouse (where my seatbelt mount is located).

Reckon you could fit a 245/60 x 15 on an 8" rim with this mod?
I had that size on my Fairlane.

Love to go to a 255/60 x 15 if I could. Haven't even got the car yet & I'm already planning stuff!

I had 255/60x15 on 8 inch rims on my 66 coupe for a while and they fitted ,but I rolled the guards . You need the right off set / back space rim .
