Alternator for '67 with 302
« on: August 10, 2015, 04:31:07 pm »
The bearings are rumbling & there is shaft play in my Motorcraft alternator 5V 60A D8Zf 10300 BA.
Unknown provenance, so anticipating buying a new one, plug'n'play.
I should probably go for a higher output while I'm at it, as I want to install better headlights at some stage.
But all the ones I've found advertised, eBay, suppliers, etc, are chrome plated & highly polished. I really don't want the extra bling - it would look OTT in an engine bay with minimum chrome - just the standard alloy finish, & I don't want to modify my factory wiring either for any reason.
Any leads? Bursons perhaps? Any brands to stay away from?
Thanks for any advice.

Just get a Bosch unit. Mine came off an XB Falcon & bolted straight up to the 289. Great alternators & parts available anywhere.

Thanks Evan, I'll see if I can track one down from Bursons or wherever.

Bear in mind that you'll need to do a slight rewire because the external regulator will no longer be needed. Well worth the effort though.

I just dug up my old instructions. I assume that things didn't change much between 1964 & 1967.

B+ goes to battery (I used 100A wire here)
Remove green/red idiot light wire from "I" terminal on the regulator and connect to D+ on Bosch alternator.

To remove existing regulator, discard the following:

Yellow wire from "A" terminal to starter relay (battery side).
White/black wire from "S" terminal to old alternator.
White wire from "F" terminal to old alternator.
Black/red wire from Gnd terminal on regulator to alternator..

You can also checkout the alternators from Custom Mustangs as they are a straight swap  no rewiring needed.

Herman.
Have now converted the other half into doing some of the Concours washin, cleaning & polishing stuff!!!!!!!!
