65 Coupe Resto
« on: January 19, 2015, 08:30:10 am »
Hi fellow members. I've been visiting this forum for over 12 months now getting tips and ideas off everybody. Finally took the time to move all my pictures of my 65 Coupe restoration so far over to my tablet. I bought this Coupe back in Sept 2013 and have slowly been pulling it apart since. The plan at the moment is to return it to it's original colours (with a set of 17" mags) - Caspian Blue with white interior and blue highlights.....I'll put the pics I have so far up over the next couple days. Enjoy my pain, fun and excitement over the coming months.....or years.....

From what I can tell, this engine is 'matching numbers' ? Someone here might be able to confirm it's close enough to be considered period correct......

It came with factory issued rusty cowl and floors.......frames seem in good condition however.....
140 spot welds later......
For this project I've decided to use KBS Rustseal and Wurth weld thru primer.

Due to a leaking window frame, water has got behind and under the dash. Decided to take it out as well.
You can see rust in the door posts where the door hinge brackets bolt in. I'll be taking care of that too.

The car came with a new skin for the passenger side door. When I removed the skin I found rusty brackets etc. So they got removed and treated as well.

Ok it's been a while since I've posted an update. Been busy with school hols and work.....did manage to get down to the All American show at Castle Hill which was great.. Both side pillars are rusty on the inside, so started with the Passenger side first. Also received a new auto welding helmet (from evilbay - Hong kong), but was pleasantly surprised at how well it works.

Spent some more time on separating the Passenger side A pillar today......rust all the way......thinking I'll end up taking the roof off (skin only) to make sure i get rid of all the rust. I only want to restore this beast once!

Been a while since I've posted an update. I've been very busy but have been doing small odd jobs on little pieces. However I managed to get a full day on the car and decided to attack the roof removal. Glad I did. As suspected it is full of rust, really bad behind the driver sail panel. Will have to take that quarter off to perform repair and replacement....

I think I can recover the old one. The real bad rust seems to have started in the frame underneath. I think a leaky window in the bottom corners has allowed the moisture in. Probably a new quarter panel or panel skin will be needed.

Been a bit lazy with the updates.......but still slowly working on the pony. Got the LHS Quarter removed and started repairing the rusted frame. I welded in some bracing before I cut into the frame to try and ensure the car stays straight. I also brushed in some Rust Seal before I tacked in the repair piece. I've also been cleaning some of the window/door mechanisms and got some new nylon rollers/guides from Harry's last week.

Door latch clean up. I actually removed the springs and repainted them after thorough cleaning and wire brushing.

Got the LHS sail panel frame repairs done last week. Next up will be a tidy up the area before a new Quarter panel is installed.

Amazing effort - have to appreciate the work you've put into it so far.
My biggest challenge was to stay motivated but I like what I ended up with - good luck & I look forward to watching your project. :thumb:
