Hello,
Depends on the year of the 302.
Roller cam engines use a different grade oil.
Ryco filters are made in china now.
Peter.

Hey CPU,

Don’t mean to be a spoiler but noticing a fair few emails like these that would be better placed in the ‘Tech Torque Pre 1973’ section.  Or are you being just plain swamped ?

If it's an original flat tappet 302 Windsor use an SL or earler rated oil with around 1600ppm of ZDDP (Zinc-Phosphate) to protect the valve train. ZDDP content was lowered from SM rated oil onwards. Penrite uses high quality ingredients and has plenty of ZDDP in their classic car oils.

Synthetic oil isn't ideal for older type engines as it tends to seep past the seals and gaskets of the era.

Any branded oil filter should be OK. Avoid plain box products. As said, wipe a skim of oil around the rubber seal before fitting.

Penrith HPR30, perfect for these engines and loaded with ZDDP.

Yeah I think I'll go with Penrite HPR 30. Someone else I know also recommended this. Thanks for the advice!

So how important is the quality of the oil filter? Would something like this be ok:

Far as I know Ryco is fine but you can get it for just 29 cents more and avoid postage by going round to your nearest Supercheap.

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Ryco-Oil-Filter-Z9.aspx?pid=8130#Combo

They also have a "premium" Ryco Z9 they say is better for about $12 I think, but I can't find it on their website.

I added half a dozen of these to an order from CJ's a while ago @ $6 each to keep me going.

Always used Valvoline engine Armour 10-40 in all my 302s and 289s V8s, some have done over 375,000klm on gas, all on ryco filters, never had a problem.
only problem i had was trying penrite, i found it made the sump and tappet cover gaskets leak on my older 289s and 302s, swapped back to Valvoline.
