Panel filler - how to detect

Just wondering how others check for body filler on their cars or when buying one. is using a magnet okay? Cheers

simple

use a fridge magnet
the thin type
looks like a business card
if it falls off
you know there is body filler.

I did the same when buying my car, suggest you ask seller if he is ok with you doing that, if he says no, you can walk away, but always polite to ask.

Also take an old t-shirt or thin rag that you can put between the magnet and paint incase the owner is worried about the paint being scratched.

Ask the owner if it's ok first, some get offended thinking their car is bogless.....especially yanks over there  :omg:

Or you can buy a bog/filler/bondo depth gauge .

Harts or Brisbane refinishing supplies would have them or get you one. They are really designed to measure paint film thickness not bog as such. Most paint manufactures specify a maximum paint thickness to which they guarantee the finish . The issue is these days many restos are now covered in spray polyester  which builds very high this will give  a high reading over much of the car.
