I have a Grant Classic Wood 3-spoke steering wheel which a previous owner fitted to my 68 Mustang. It has the 3 shoulder bolts connecting through the steering wheel to the hub.

Are the 3 shoulder bolts designed to take the torque of the steering wheel being turned during driving?

When I remove the 3 shoulder bolts the centre nut on the end of the steering column is not tight enough to stop the steering wheel from spinning. I can tighten this nut to 30ft-lb but the centre hole is not splined so I am assuming the torque from the wheel is taken by the 3 shoulder bolts and the centre nut is just to stop the steering wheel being pulled off the column?

Don't have the answer to your question but try their website..

look up the model number for your wheel then click on the instruction manual tab.. hope this helps.

Some thing wrong here ,the centre nut that goes onto the shaft has to be tight sure, but it only holds the wheel on, not from spinning ,the boss has to have splines that slide onto the shaft .You may have to buy a new boss that is correct ,rocket industries sell them and most mustang shops .Dont fit the wheel or drive the car with the wheel on till you have this done, as the nut will not stop the steering wheel from spinning .The other bolts dont hold the wheel on .

Your Grant wheel comes with splines to match the steering shaft. If yours doesn't have splines then they have been stripped. Also you should have a 20 mm collet that slides onto the shaft first ... this determines the height the wheel sits on the shaft so that it is compatible with the boss.

The instructions don't help much.

Just to clarify:

The boss fits over the splines on the steering shaft and rotates with the shaft - no problems there.

The centre nut holds the steering wheel axially on the shaft but is not supposed to take the torque of the steering wheel turning.

That must mean that the 3 shoulder bolts that attach through the steering wheel and into the boss are what take the torque when the steering wheel is turned?

Let me put it another way: If the centre nut were to fail you could pull the wheel and the boss axially off the steering shaft. If the 3 shoulder bolts were to fail the steering wheel would stay on but would spin helplessly.

I think I have convinced myself that it is installed correctly. I just wanted to check as the shoulder bolts are small, maybe 6-8mm.

The Grant wheel doesnt have any splines, the splines are on the boss.  The boss goes on the steering column and the grant wheel bolts to it with the 3 bolts.  I reckon the wrong boss is installed.

Hang on.

There's nothing wrong with the splines or the boss.

My question is just whether the 3 shoulder bolts stop the wheel from spinning.

Yep got you now.  Yes the 3 bolts are what stop the wheel spinning.

Thanks Tim.

It's a stupid question but best to get confirmation, especially with something like this.

The 3 bolts bolt the steering wheel to the boss ,the boss slides onto the shaft and is held on by the shaft nut and the boss is splined .

Yes the three bolts stop the wheel from spinning on the boss.  The centre bolt holds the boss (and wheel) to the column.

I know this because I have a grant wheel and I recently replaced the boss as the copper strips for the horn contacts were chewed up.
