I have a 65 Mustang Coupe almost ready to get on the road. What are the lighting requirements, front and rear.

Anyone from Queensland??

You will have to get Aussie compliant headlights (dip to the left) to replace the US ones, that's a simple change over and the lights are available at Repco etc.

In W.A. no changes need to be made to tail lights as long as they are functioning properly and are the original style (ie not modified). Some States require an amber indicator, not sure about Qld. Hopefully somebody will chime in.

Just head lights, Inertia real belts in the front and a minimum of 3 point belts in the back and baby bolts. Then LO8 compliance plate.

As Shaun has said , and if you want a 5 seater a lap belt for the center of back seat ,and a right hand outside mirror .No other lighting has to be changed pre 74 .You have to pay for the compliance plate also .The rest is a normal RWC inspection .

Just on the headlights,  you can get Scott Drake repro ones now for RHD vehicles,  they have the ford badge in in the centre and a sort ofblue cover over the bulb.  Not much over 20 dollars each.

Narva do a kit for around $120 with new H4 headlights and bulbs.  Don't bother with the cheap and nasty ones as the refelctors are garbage and the feet that position then are never in the right spot.  Not worth the $20 you save.

Seatbelts - easiest to get a kit from Gasoline Alley in Brissie. Ready to fit.

RHS mirror and you're ready to go.

I used a mobile compliance guy.  He came around, checked everything had been done and engraved and fitted the plate.

Just to be a pain, heres my 2 bobs worth.
i have amber lenses in the reversing lights in Frankenstang, rewired as indicators.
There is a small reversing light added beside the number plate.
I wouldnt dare drive in Queensland with red indicators.
The Fu$%wits on the road up here have enough trouble coping with everyday driving, let alone seeing something out of the ordinary.
I think you would be asking for trouble if you didnt have amber indicators

scedd 1 ,i live in QLD and own and have owned plenty of american cars and use the brake lights as blinkers and never had trouble  ,i did own a 69 and 70 mach 1 and turned the reverse lights into blinkers and that was a problem as a lot of drivers did not see them because they were small and under the rear b/bar .So i dont think its a problem in brake lights ,and its the bloody tourist coming up here and rubber necking and not watching where they are going that cause the problems .

If you're not a purist, the LED tail lights with built in amber indicator lights are great. Some prefer to stay with all red but I like the safety aspect for the reasons scedd1 mentioned. They're available from NPD, I'm not sure who sells them locally.

Custom Mustangs (a forum sponsor) do a LED taillight with amber turn signal for the 65/66, not sure about later models. Mine work well and other drivers know what they mean.

You seriously have to be retarded not to notice a red blinking light.

Inb4 someone mentions many road users are retarded.

Yep, thats the whole point.
Its not what they expect to see, so they either dont see it or get scared.
I have met some retarded people and they seemed a lot smarter than some drivers i have seen on our roads.

I don't doubt that, I did mean 'retarded' in the literal sense as in the opposite of 'advanced' with no disrespect to the handicapped.

Hello,
I have fitted these lenses and an additional globe and partition in the lamp body.
I like the look and since doing so have had no near misses.
I used to get morons up my trumpet all the time.

Hello,
Only had to change the headlights in Victoria.
Changed the rear lights after too many near misses.

I think any of you flippantly throwing the term "retarded" around need to have a look at yourselves and consider your maturity. It's a cheap shot at people who can't stand up for themselves and is offensive.

If you're referring to handicapped people - I will never call them retarded or spastic even though these were the correct terms when I was growing up.

I'm happy to call fools, tools, etc. retarded as they are the opposite to advanced.

In a similar vein your ignition timing can be advanced or retarded to suit.  I don't find the word's use to be exclusive, I get your point but I think political correctness goes a bit too far and blacklisting the word will only give it more power to be offensive.

I imagine in the next decade the word handicapped will start to be applied to tools and fools and then deemed offensive and as a result a new word will be used to describe those with a disadvantage.

I see it as part of the language that many of us grew up with, just like cripple, fag and gay.
You should meet my nephew one day, he is 42, lives with his girlfriend in a supervised share house, rides the bus 10km's to work at the sheltered workshop (yes its still called that), drinks piss (but only XXXX Gold) and is the most vocal Bronco's supporter i know. He was born with sever Downs Syndrome and was raised by his entire extended family to become the fine man he is today.
He still refers to himself as retarded.
If i mean to insult or denigrate somebody there wont be any confusion about it.
I still stand by my comment that many retarded people i have met are smarter than many drivers i have met.

Indeed, Nigger Brown Kiwi Boot Polish was sold here.  The word queer was once considered offensive but the gays empowered it by using it themselves, I think political correctness does more harm than good.

I think people being offended are taking things too far, Steve Hughes sums it up nicely.
