Let me know when you are comming down. Will grab the wife, and come over for a drive.

Hi 69 candy, Will let you know. :thumb:

Debating whether to drive the Grande down. On the one hand i want to take the trailer, on the other hand would love love to take the Grande for a nice long cruise. Kicking myself now for not having a tow bar fitted yet.

Re: CAR POLISH - Cleaning your Pads
« Reply #251 on: November 23, 2012, 11:02:51 pm »
Question was asked on another Thread - How does one clean their Foam Polishing Pads?

If you are single and have your own washing machine - just give them a cold wash with your favourite detergent - but do not use softener. However, if you are married then that will not happen. You will never hear the end of it if you use that precious bloody washing machine. :kickass:

There is a product called DP Polishing Pad Rejuvenator that i use. Here is my Pad Cleaning Kit -

I use one of those cheap rectangular plastic containers because i can fit more pads in there to soak. I just fill it with a bucket and a half of water, put one scoop of DP Pad Rejuvenator in there, stir it to make sure the powder is fully dissolved then throw the pads in weigh them down with some wood, and let them soak overnight -

Next morning i use the nail brush to clean the gunk off the face of the pads, then dunk them back in and wring them out a couple of times -

Then i lay them flat on clean concrete and give them a good blast with the hose, paying particular attention to the indentations on the pad where polish accumulates, wring them out and repeat the process, then put them somewhere to dry - normally on the parcel shelf of the car -

Easy. All done outdoors so it avoids arguments.

Has anyone got any tips on polishing Alloy wheels - I've got Coy's Torque Thruster type and I'd like a bit more shine. I have seen them polished to almost a Chrome like finish.

Hi Blu302, It is a specialist field. If you do a Google search for Alloy Wheel Polishing -You will find someone who can do it for you.

However, if you prefer to do it yourself, check out this youtube video from Autogeek

Hi jusTANG, I checked out the pommie Forum - Detailing World - because they would have the most beat up, dirty rims due to their weather. It seems a product called IronX is a great rim cleaner. Read about it in the following Thread -

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=284815

In fact Detailing World have a whole section of the Forum dedicated to cleaning wheels -

I'd take them off to do it properly, and use the following process/products.

15 minute Low Water PWC Wheel Clean

Or you could try Meguiars wheel cleaner? unsure how good it is, but will be finding out as soon as I find where my bottle of the stuff is!! lol

Good Video Nobby76 - Keep them coming :thumb:

I have finished a 4 stage Menzerna Polish on the 1969 Red Mach1. Yesterday i applied the first coat of Jetseal, allowed it to dry for about 2 hours, wiped the Jetseal off and then put the car out in bright sunlight to check the results.
I am about 90% happy with the job. The other 10%? On the black part of the bonnet there are still some minor swirls. Had a couple of people inspect the whole car and they could not see them. Hmmm... I can! Bugger! I had needed to be a bit more aggressive with the first stage.

When you do this type of car polishing - if you don`t get the first "Correction Stage " done properly, no amount of further finer polishing will hide the defects. Problem was the lighting- or lack of - in the factory area where i polish the cars. I should have gone to supercrap and bought a $25 Halogen Light set and set the Halogens to each panel as i was buffing. That would have shown the swirls were not completely eliminated. Without Halogens i could have just driven the car out in the sun to see the same thing.
Check out the following Link to see what i mean - It is a great read -
http://www.autopia.org/forum/click-brag/130897-foose-mustang-prepped-show-todd-cooperider-esoteric-auto-detail.html

I am not overly bothered because the bonnet will be changed before the Perth Nationals anyway. Just part of the learning curve. Here are the photos of the Mach1 out in the sun -

Chemical Guys do have a lot of great :hi: products. We use quite a few ourselves. 10% across the range is an excellent discount. Thanks Rex :hi:

Tried out the ZFE 710 Polisher with the supplied Pads. I really like the Polisher. It has more than enough power with the 710watt motor. Does not bog down at all under pressure and it is very easy to hold and manouevre across the paint surface. However, i do not think much of the supplied Pads, but they will do the job.

At this point i had better let you know what happened when the Polishers arrived. I tested each Polisher before sending them. Five of the six were good, but one was dead on arrival. Ah...Crap! They came with a one year warranty - but i did not fancy sending the broken Polisher back to China. My son Damien is pretty handy when it comes to repairing power tools. He pulled the back off and found a wire had not been fed through the inner casing correctly, which meant the outer casing had just been forced over the top of the wire resulting in a cracked inner casing. He reconnected the wire, fed it through the casing correctly and reassembled it. We had to just tape the rear casing back on, but the Polisher now works like a charm.

I had already tried the Polisher with Lake Country CCS Pads and it did a very good job of polishing.

Yesterday i tested the Polisher with the supplied Pads. Chose the stiffest Wave Pad , which is an orange colour. The test car was my 68 Gulfstream Aqua coupe which was painted 3-4 years ago. I very rarely use water to wash this car. I use quick detailer and microfibre once a month to remove dust, then apply a wax. This has now resulted in some marring of the paint surface, particularly on the rear quarter panel. The first job was to eliminate the marring.

Here is the car -

I fitted the Orange Pad to the Polisher, gave the Pad a spritz with quick detailer, then put 4 pea sized dobs on the Pad using Menzerna PF 2400 before dabbing the Pad on a section of the quarter panel. You would normally Polish an area of about 400mm x 400mm.

Turned the Polisher to speed no.1 then spread the Polish evenly across the area to be buffed -

Worked the Polish for about 4 minutes on speed no.4 using slow steady movements overlapping about 50% each pass. As the polish began to go clear i backed off to speed No.3 for another minute before wiping off the excess Polish with a Microfibre cloth -

Followed this up with another stage using Menzerna SF4000 on a Green Wave Pad

Quite satisfied with the end result. Marring is nowgone from the panel  and the gloss is restored.

So why don`t i like the Pads? The Orange Pad is not stiff enough to give a good cutting action, and when i took it off the Polisher i pulled at the Pad and actually tore it a bit. Do yourselves a favour, buy some Pads from Waxit or Chemguys taking advantage of the discounts on offer. All you need is 2 stiff Pads, 2 Medium Polishing Pads and 2 Fine Pads.

The ZFE 710 is a very good Polisher, but will perform best with decent Pads attached.

Hi Rod, So if we junk these pads and buy the Lake Country pads and a new backing plate, we were probably better off buying one of the MACHINE POLISHER KITS off WAXIT considering we would have had an AUSSIE warranty as well.

http://www.waxit.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=462&category_id=87&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1

Not to mention all your time and effort as well.

Hi Vic, Those kits from waxit are comprehensive and very good value.

I have no problem with being a guinea pig to test out products. None of us knew whether the Polishers we bought from China were any good. Same goes for the Pad kit. As previously stated - I am very impressed with the ZFE Polisher itself. So the Pads are not much cop - No biggie - we are half way there.

You still have the option of using the supplied pads. The Flat Orange pads i have not tried yet, they may be ok. Might as well use the pad kit rather than throw them away.

I still have a couple of options for Pad supplies that i am looking into. Stay tuned.

Vic, How long before you want to get cracking with your Polisher?

Hi Rocket, I hope I didn't offend you with my last post. It certainly wasn't my intention, if so I am sorry.
We all took a chance and the polisher turned out to be a good one so far.(well maybe not yours)
However knowing what we know now, The WAXIT kits are good value and as I said a Aussie warranty.
Maybe the company you bought them from sells the polisher on it's own.
I will use these pads because paint work on both the cars is nowhere near show condition(more like daily driver) if you can list what colour pad does which stage.
Also during the test you used two wavy pads. What are the pink flat pads used for?
I am going to get stuck in during the Xmas break. If its not too hot up here. One of those Airconditioners youv'e got would be great. Do you think a 14" pedestal fan will work just as well.

Cheers Vic.

Vic, Absolutely no offense taken mate. :thumb: In fact i was thinking along similar lines.

I would certainly try the flat Orange Pads first for the correction stage. All i did yesterday to determine which pad to use was to compress each pad to find the firmest/most coarse. The Orange Pads both felt coarse. I chose the wave pad to see what they are like.

From coarse to fine i rated them in order -

Orange - Coarsest
Green
Blue
Black.  Finest.
The Lambswool - anybodys guess

Hi Rocket,Vic,
I've ordered the Concours Machine and kit from Waxit. it hasn't arrived yet but when I get a chance to use it I'll give some feedback. I ordered the Menzerna kit with Lake Country pads and also the Clay kit and Citrus wash from Chemical Guys - see I have been absorbing all this info.
Really looking forward to having a go - may try it on the Wife's Cooper S first - although it has sensational paint already.
Just looking at the Menzerna polishes included I'm not sure if the first stage included might have too much cut - I think it's P1000 - my paintwork is in pretty good condition. Any comment Rocket?
Cheers,
Bob

I'll look forward to seeing your vehicle and your review on that kit.
