Rocket,
This is all new to me. So taking in all the information at this stage. I will be trying all this out on my daily drive as I need the practice for the mustang(can't afford to slip up). I am in the process of writting down all the equipment required to do the job(clay bar, polisher, polish, sealer etc). I think I will go with either waxit or car care products at this stage.

Hi jusTang, Thanks, but the reality is that anybody can achieve results like this using a machine polisher, but some colours show the shine better than others. Light colours can have the same shine, but just do not show it as well. That is why i like polishing Red and Black cars.

The requirements are a good polishing machine, some polishes such as Menzerna, Clay and Clay Lube, Quick Detailer and Microfibre Cloths. Oh... and also bucket loads of patience and commitment to the job. It has taken about 12 hours so far to get the red mach1 to this stage and probably another 4 or 5 hours till it is finished.
The polishing job is being done in 4 stages. Three are finished with one stage remaining. After that it will receive three coats of sealant allowing 24 hours between coats.

For those new to machine polishing, it would be better to split the job into maybe 2-3 hours per day over a week because it is quite demanding on the shoulder and back muscles. No problem with doing the job in sections either. It could be roof first, then bonnet and boot, followed by the sides of the car over the course of a month. Just put the sealant on aeach area as you get finished

The Polishing machines i am using are the Flex Rotary for the first three stages and then the Flex forced rotation orbital for the final stage. After the best part of three days swinging off the rotary as i learn to master the different technique required, i am very sore, but the next stage with the orbital will be much easier. Gives meaning to" no pain - no gain"!

The good news for those using the ZFE or Concours machine or the Flex orbital is that they are easier to use. I even reverted back to the ZFE machine a couple of times over the last few days when the rotary became a bit cumbersome for me to handle.

So get to it guys. Lets see what you can do.

Rocket,
I have been lurking on this post for a while and just want to add my thanks for all your efforts. The time spent polishing must have been considerable and then even more time updating with comphrehensive posts - very generous of you, you're a boon to this website and the mustang hobby!

If it is not already (work computers don't always show everything on this site) I'll add to the calls for making this a permanent sticky topic.

once again, thanks Rocket!

Hi Xrayman, Appreciate your kind words. Thanks. :hi:

Fact is i used to enjoy painting cars as a hobby, but the lungs can`t take the thinners/paint fumes anymore. I believe we all need to make a contribution and found a pleasurable way to do just that. It is not work to me. I get a kick out of making those ponies shine. :thumb:

If through this Thread we can show others how to present their cars with the best possible shine, that is a good thing.

Besides - us old farts need an interest.

Hi Rod, I thought I had better move my answer back to this thread instead of your "Time for an update" thread.
My 69 Fastback is Gulfstream Aqua and my 67 Coupe is Clearwater Aqua.

Hi Rod, I thought I had better move my answer back to this thread instead of your "Time for an update" thread.
My 69 Fastback is Gulfstream Aqua and my 67 Coupe is Clearwater Aqua.

Vic

Hi Vic, Gulfstream Aqua is a gorgeous colour. Just so happens that my 68 Gulfstream Aqua coupe is at work at the moment. Noticed there is some marring and a few swirl marks on it now due to washing with quick detailer then wiping it off with microfibre, waxing etc over the last 3 years since it was painted. Gives me an idea.

I will be finished with the red mach1 in a couple of days. I will then polish the rear quarter panel on the 68 coupe using the ZFE Polisher and the Pads that came with the kit. That will give you an idea of how your 69 Fastback will look, and also tell us which pads to use with the Menzerna Polish.

This is the car -

Hey Rod, You must either be a glutton for punishment or you have a polishing fetish, or should that be a Menzerna shine fetish.
I was just looking at your 68 and thinking how nice it looked and then thought about your Grande and remembered you haven't finished polishing it yet and you want to start another one.

No.... No...No! The Grande is going into the workshop in the next couple of weeks to have a new engine and rack and pinion steering fitted, so no point polishing till that is finished.

Yesterday the 68 coupe was parked outside my office door and i saw the marring on the rear quarter panel. Cannot have paintwork in that condition ... have to polish it asap :kickass:
In reality i want a bit of a break from polishing. Will probably just do one side of the 68 next week, then the missus and i hope to head down the south east for a few days break. :burnout:  :thumb:

Great stuff jusTang, I'm sure we'll all benefit at some point.  :thumb:

Rocket, I'm drooling over the red '69 .

I'd love to give mine that treatment but it just sounds like too much hard work! Maybe in a couple of years if it starts to lose its lustre.

I'm in awe of the info on this thread.
You guys have inspired me. I've always been a bit scared of using machines to polish my car but I can see that the results are worth the effort. (And I thought that I was OCD with polishing before)
Thanks Rocket and Justang - I've just looked through the Waxit site.
Cheers,
Bob

Finally got home after a week in central QLD (1/2 of it sitting around waiting for the Emerald Ford dealer to replace a broken back axle and both wheel bearings in the Hilux again, because the @#$%@#* Toyota dealer said come back in 2 weeks, were too busy @#$%&@#*) end of rant, for now
Found a big box and had a look at a very nice polisher.
Many thanks Rocket.
I walked out to have a look at the Hilux and my daughter pulled in next to me in her 3 month old VE SV6 ute, in Phantom Black.
You could see the reflection of the Hilux as clear as day in the Commodore door.
When you look at the white hilux, there is almost no reflection at all.
Apart from the fact it only gets washed once a year, or when it rains, it has NEVER been polished in 5 years, or parked undercover since new.
So i will take some before and after shots and it will show how good a lazy amatuer can do.
It will have to wait until the new year though, as my daughter took the polisher home, so she can give it to me for a X-mas present!!

Hi BLU302, Machine polishing will certainly add to the shine on your car. Glad you are inspired. Takes some time, but as you wrote - worth the effort.

Here are a few pics of the Red Mach1 after 4 polishing stages -

Sounds like that Toyota Dealer was not helpful at all. Bugger! Good thing the Ford Dealer helped you.  :thumb:

Glad to know your polishing kit arrived. That is going to make an excellent Christmas present from your daughter. Is dear old dad going to polish the VE ute for her?

Good idea to start with the Hilux. Sounds like it needs some love. :thumb:
