After leaving the Hilux sitting outside for 5 years it needs a wash and polish and Frankenstangs paint is now 10 years old, so it needs a polish too.
So i will have one if theres one left.

Here tip for those of us with decal stripes

Once you have finished the task of polishing your pride & joy,  go back around with a new polishing clothe and run fingernail with the clothe along the edges of the stripes to remove the excess polish build up.  You will be amazed how crisp it looks.  Ooh and judges didn't mend this extra attention details either.

That leaves 3 more - first in best dressed.

Here is the Link for those interested -
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-710W-Dual-Action-Machine-Car-Polisher-Buffer-Sander/465867090.html

By ordering the 6 - cost will be $116.53. Pick up from Pooraka SA or will post interstate or country for you as long as you pay for the postage.

Jeremy, Glad to hear from you. Sounds like you are enjoying SEMA     Mum said to say hi to Monique

The polishing machine you are talking about is the Flex XC 3401 VRG. But be careful. The Americans use a different power system. So the Flex we need is called the Export model which is 230 volt. If they have it at SEMA can you grab me one and i will fix you up when you return. Will put the Link from mwizz ( Mark ) up shortly.

Edit - here is the Link from Mark -

Your blue Mach1 is finished. Here are the photos i took earlier -

Hey Rod
Just how many polishers can you use at once.   :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :bolt:
If you get to be a Flex agent I will probably get one off you if the price is right.  Nearly ordered one from Tool King when I was looking on their site but I am running short just now and was thinking (dreaming) perhaps after Xmas. The ute could do with a good polish and so could Briars car.

Car is looking better than what it was when it went in and its not even painted yet.

Hi Jack, My Flex crapped itself today. I cannot complain - that machine has done lots and lots of cars over the last 3 or 4 years. Their is a maintenance manual online which explains that it does require lubrication now and again. But i have never lubed it! So my bad! That`ll teach me! :kickass: I suspect it would cost more to repair than just buying a new one from the USA. Something about being controlled by a computer chip.

Will be interesting to see what Jeremy can come up with. Could be a problem if the Aussie Agent has an exclusive agreement. I believe the machines are actually made in Germany and shipped all over the world. Probably simply a matter of economies of scale that they are cheaper from the USA.

Had a look at your car late this arvo. Brad has done a great job working that bodyfiller. Will look better than new shortly.  :thumb:

Hi Justang, I believe your Rockwell machine is a Rotary. Had a look at the specs which show it is 1200W with a Variable speed range of 600 - 3000RPM. Being a rotary and quite powerful it will generate a lot of heat very quickly on the paint surface.

This means it will do the job much faster than a orbital dual action machine - including the Flex. But - that heat can burn through the paint very easily if the machine is kept in one position or crosses over an edge. Rotaries are best left to the professionals, however if you have already used the machine and feel confident using it - go for it. To a professional time is money so they want to get the job done as quickly as possible, therefore the rotary is their friend.

Another consideration is that rotary polishers can leave holograms and buffer trails on the paint even in the hands of a seasoned pro, so they will often do the final stage of a polish job using an orbital dual action machine such as the Flex because they do not generate as much heat and therefore will not leave those holograms and buffer trails on the paint.

The Flex is considered to be the Rolls Royce of orbital dual action polishers. It is a direct drive machine which is designed to have a orbital rotation that simulates the circular motion of a human hand. It has exceptional torque which means it will not bog down under load. The fact that orbital dual action machines do not generate much heat on the paint means they are a lot safer for beginners.

The cheaper orbital dual action machine mentioned in the link is the next step down from the Flex. A lot of people cannot justify spending $480 -$650 on a polishing machine. This makes a machine for under $150 a better purchase for those people. It MAY bog down under load and take a bit longer to polish a car than the more expensive machines, but that is a fair compromise for a weekend warrior.

Hope that answers your question.

Hi Herman, it all depends on the amount of money one is prepared to spend.

Firstly, for those on a budget the kit in the following link is extremely good value. At $299.95 it includes a Dual Action Polishing Machine, 4 Lake Country Buffing Pads, 3 different Menzerna Polishes and Menzerna Sealant all in a carry bag. Waxit are very customer focused and fast to deliver. Link -
http://www.waxit.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=462&category_id=87&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1

In addition to the above, you should also clay the car before polishing. Here is a Link to a good value Clay and Lube from Chemical Guys -
 http://www.chemguys.com.au/Gray_Light_Duty_209_Gram_Auto_Detail_Clay_Bar_p/cly_kit_2.htm

A supply of clean Microfibre cloths is essential. Link -
http://www.chemguys.com.au/Microfiber_towel_p/mic_333_6.htm
We buy packs of 25 Microfibre cloths from supercheap. The orange ones which are often on sale for around $30. The quality of these is not as good as the cloths in the Chemical Guys link, but it does not matter to us because our cloths tend to go walkabout. The factory boys use them to clean mirrors and the car factory use them for anything! :kickass:

If you want to get straight into top of the line equipment, buy a Flex from overseas which will cost about $480 delivered. Link -
 http://www.toolking.com/flex-xc3401vrgcee-variable-speed-dual-action-orbital-polisher-230-volt#

The Menzerna Polish can be bought from Waxit.com.au in a 4 polish sample pack for $50. Pads can be purchased locally from Chemical Guys. i would suggest 2 of each in Orange, White and Black.

I am currently putting a budget pack together with the intention of making it even cheaper. Did you see the Link to the Chinese dual Action Machine for $116.53 plus postage? Add the Menzerna 4 pack sampler for $50. Pads are included with the machine. So for under $200 you can get cracking. Only kicker is i have not tried the machine yet. They will arrive in about 10 working days.

Edit. I am a big fan of Menzerna Polishes. For my purpose, buffing cars which have mostly had recent paint jobs Menzerna is superb. There are a lot of other polishes which can be used. A popular low cost polish is Autoglym Super Resin Polish, and there are also a couple of Meguiars which are pretty good. Came across the following Thread on the Detail Paradise Forum where a chap used this combo on an older Commodore ute. Check it out -

I can vouch for Autoglym Super Resin polish. I used it on mine before applying the Autoglym HD Wax. It doesn't seem to have any cutting ability so I expect it's only good for new, freshly cut or maintained paint.
Rocket, can you recommend a hand polish/fine cutter with slight abrasive qualities that I can use before the other two products? I'm forever noticing fine scratches, especially after washing. I learnt a very valuable lesson a few months back......DON'T DRY WITH A CHAMOIS!!  :ouch: The level of shine in my paint is so high that everything shows up. Fortunately, the HD wax fills alot of the fine scratches & brings back the richness.

I found that autogeek had some good packages with the flex compared to  toolking, specially if one was to bring in the Pads from them too like you suggested earlier

Hi Evan, Some paints are considered hard while others are considered soft. Sounds like your paint is of the soft variety. I have seen marks in paint after washing and drying exactly as you describe. Very important to use a Chenille Wash Mitt when washing, then dry with a Microfibre Drying Towell. Check out the Links to ChemGuys i posted in an earlier post.

I believe your paint would benefit from the use of a Sealant such as ChemGuys Jetseal 109 or Zaino. This will put a hard surface on your paint and therefore protect it from those fine scratches. If you apply three coats of Sealant (after washing the car), allowing 24 hours between coats, then finish off with an application of your HD Wax the shine will be incredible and your paint protected.

I will do a search later and try to find a recommendation for a good, slightly abrasive hand polish. Look for the Edit on this post tonight.

Justang, I had not seen those packages before. The one in this Link seems to be very good value -
http://www.autogeek.net/flex-1000-230v.html
There are 5 Lake Country CCS Pads included. Colour of your choice. In that package i would ask for 1X Orange, 2x White, 2x Gray ( Black ).
The price of that package is $459.99 USD. That price does not include Shipping, which if done by Fedex or UPS would probably add another $200 or so. However you can request shipping via US Postal Service which is a lot cheaper.

I order pads in Bulk quantities from Autogeek. Link -
http://www.autogeek.net/lake-country-ccs-6pack.html
I buy 6 each of the following colours each time - Orange, White, Green Polishing, Gray ( black ). Those 4 colours will take care of every job. Shipping cost is normall $80 via USPostalService.

Hey Gretschem, The Festool Shinex is a beautiful rotary polisher. Have one ourselves, but the bloody panel beater realised how good it is for sanding bodyfiller. At the time we had 22 Hail Damaged Hyundais to repair.
After that i feel the tool is ruined for polishing duties.Worried that a bit of filler could fall out of it and scratch a new paint job.

Tossing around whether to buy another and keep it in the boot. At $760 it is not cheap!

Gretschem - you do a lot of detailing - any suggestions of a good, slightly abrasive polish that can be used by hand?

The princess has a year old SS Commodore in the new Chlorophyll colour (blue in the sun, green in the shade).
It lives in the garage and has 5,000kms on the clock.
We will keep it for about 5 years/ 25,000kms.
Would this sealant be suitable for the factory paint, which seems to be a top quality job to me?
My main aim is to avoid washing and polishing, as i am a lazy bastard, even though i am getting the fancy polisher.

Thanks Rocket will definitely take it on board but just to confirm what is the main differences when polishing old paint and a car which has just been painted.

Normally I am a Meguirs person who goes with the hand polishing of vehicle were I can go around the car up to 5 times including the washing & drying
