My rear boot lid, as yet to apply the sealant/wax to the paint. Also I need to paint the ceiling in my garage. A quick quiz, can someone pick the sign sign above the door?

Cheers

Raven, that is a seriously great shine! Well done.

Being an old fart, i cannot make out the words on the sign, however i can see the dinosaur. Guess it has something to do with your name... Dino.

Noob at this too but u inspired me Rod.
On the weekend, a clay bar that has been sitting in a corner of my garage for a couple of years, finally got to see the light of day
I was a bit skeptical. Voodoo ? Hocus pocus ?
I used some liquid soap and water as the lubricant which worked well and set upon my AU XR8.
Well I gotta say I was pretty impressed !
The paint just feels smoother now. Hard to describe really.
Gave it a wash before and after, hand polish with a meguiars kwikwax at the end.
I found myself staring at the car across the road in my cars reflection !
Came up really nice.

I can smell oranges !

Hi Michael, I was a bit of a skeptic too - until i tried it. No Voodoo with Clay as you found out. It lifts the contaminants out of the paint so easily.

Your XR8 looked very nice before - bet it looks even better now. :thumb:

Been waiting for you to bring the Mustang to work so that we can buff your bootlid. I am tied up today and Thursday, but can you come down on Friday, Monday or Tuesday morning?Anytime between 9.30 and 12. Will take about an hour all told.

Best most informative thread i've seen in my short time here, just what i've been looking for actually. Thanks Rocket! I've been spending up a storm on cleaning products since i recently purchased my first Mustang. But i don't think i'm doing as great a job as i should be... being a novice and all. Is there anyone/anywhere in Melbourne where they have this amount of expertise that will actually do all this for you? Someone that works on Mustangs/classic cars, that can detail the body paint, maybe even the engine bay/under carriage. Give you some tips/advice on how to maintain at home perhaps. I really only learn by seeing things done in the flesh, having it shown to me. Would there be anywhere in Melbourne for this? Thanks all.

Excellent! Thanks Guys.

About 5 years ago i began visiting car detailing forums to learn all i could about paint care. All i have done is apply what i learnt. I do not claim to be an expert at car polishing. Fact is anybody could do this! Here are some forums i regularly visit to learn all i can -

Australia - Detail Paradise    http://www.detailparadise.com.au/forum.php

USA - Autogeek     http://www.autogeek.net/

UK - Detailing world     http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/index.php

For anybody who prefers to pay others to have your car polished by a professional, here is a Link to the finest from  Detail Paradise in each state -
http://www.detailparadise.com.au/forumdisplay.php?3-Pro-Detailers-Directory

We are yet to hear from a person with a lot of  hand polishing experience to impart their knowledge. My only suggestion is the meguiars 2 step polishes, followed by wax.

Hi Nobby76, Thanks mate!

Time for you to break out your detailing gear. Glad you feel inspired. I know it can get monotonous sometimes, but once i see that Menzerna shine on the first panel i get motivated to keep going.

How about posting some photos of your cars . Before and as you go. Below is another photo to inspire you. It is a 65 Fastback owned by Dave Bills. He had some windscreen work done on the fastback and the fitter rubbed dry windscreen sealer all over his boot and bonnet area. Dave was beside himself thinking his beautiful paint job had been destroyed. He brought the car down and i set about a 3 stage correction polish on his car. Came up superb. Here he is a happy fella picking up the car -

I have a few more cars to do. Moniques 69 Convertible, Jeremys 65 Fastback and also i need to finish the Grande. Thinking about getting another Festool Shinex to help do them all a bit quicker.

Rocket.

Wow that looks a million dollars, Dave must be thrilled to bits
remind me not to use his windscreen guy
can you recommend a good windscreen fitter? and does he go to the site or do we have to take the car there?

Hi Sally, I had never seen a person as gutted like Dave was when he saw the mess on his Fastback. His eyes absolutely lit up when he came to get his car after the polishing. Mind you they were starting to look a bit bloodshot after he helped drink the carton of Crownies he brought with him!

We do have one chap that we use exclusively now for all Windscreen work. He fitted a screen just a couple of weeks back for Brett and Fiona ( Pone65 ). Does a great job and takes extreme care. I will get his details from Brad and post them here in the morning.

Dale, Yes.. Dave is a great bloke and i agree - quite a character. Great value! :thumb:

65muzzy, Would be difficult to organise a group buy because there is such a variation of products. Which ones did you have in mind?
I will speak with a couple of Aussie detailing gear suppliers and see if we could organise a Forum members discount. Will get back to you on this.

Thanks to Sally and PeterP this thread is now a "Sticky"! Sally sent PeterP a request and he agreed. Thankyou.

So come on guys and girls, anybody with good car care hints and products - please post on the thread. :thumb:

The blue Mach1 is now finished after having a 4 stage Menzerna polish and 3 coats of Jetseal 109, allowing 24 hours between each coat. Very happy with it. Photos tomorrow night.

Hi Glenn, Actually a very big thankYOU for starting this thread! :thumb:

What to wash your Mustang with? Now that is very easy. This-
http://www.chemguys.com.au/Premium_Car_Wash_Shampoo_p/cws_301_16.htm

I absolutely swear by the above. Citrus Wash&Gloss is far and away the best car wash i have used. It also contains Gloss Enhancers. Used regularly it will always leave an excellent Gloss finish on your paintwork.

But do not use the trusty old sponge. Sponges leave swirlmarks in paint. I suggest a Chenille Microfibre Wash Mitt. Link -
http://www.chemguys.com.au/CAR_WASH_MITT_MICROFIBER_p/mic_493.htm

Always wash your car in the shade. To dry your car after washing, use a good quality Leather Chamois - or better still a Microfibre Towel. Link -
http://www.chemguys.com.au/MICROFIBER_DRYER_TOWEL_p/mic_721.htm

Hope this helps.

Re: CAR POLISH - Polishing Machines
« Reply #97 on: November 01, 2012, 09:13:53 pm »
There has been a bit of discussion about different polishing machines.

Brief Summary -
Rotary Polishers for professional use -
1) Festool Shinex - approx $700
2) Makita Rotary - approx $400

Fixed Rotation Orbitals - Professional or Hobby use

Aussie Flex -  approx $650
Imported Flex - approx $480 delivered.
Da s  6  - approx $230 or $270-$300 in a kit including Pads and Menzerna polish. Extremely good value for the Hobbiest.

I got to thinking. These cheaper polishing machines must be made in China, so i went searching. After only a few minutes i found this unit on alibabaexpress.com (which is a great source of all things made in China if you buy in small quantities ) -
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-710W-Dual-Action-Machine-Car-Polisher-Buffer-Sander/465867090.html
If you read the specifications it sounds extremely similar to those $230 machines. At only $140 delivered this may be great value.

I will continue searching and if i can find nothing i consider better, may place the order and be the test mule.

Maybe find six here in Adelaide to be in on it. Count me in if you think they would be a reasonable unit for us Hobbyist type users

Hi Dale, I have not come across anything better yet, although i did find a similar machine on Alibaba.com which shows minimum order quantity 1,000 units. No thanks!

I need to order another machine soon. While buffing Michael`s gorgeous 68 coupe today the Flex decided to crap itself. Managed to get the job done but the Flex kept cutting out. Now it will not start at all. Bugger! So have to make a decision. Cheap machine or another flex or go all out on another festool shinex. Not sure which way to go yet.

I do like the idea of buying 6 of the Chinese machines. Anybody besides Dale interested in one? Happy to post interstate as long as the costs are covered.

A couple of shots showing Michael`s bootlid -

All finished -
