The word Polish can be a loose term. To actually polish a car you use a buffing machine with mostly foam pads and a good quality polish to clean and shine the paintwork. My favourite range of polishes are Menzerna, which will give your car paintwork a beautiful, swirl free shine.

There are some polishes which can be used to hand polish a car, but that is extremely hard yacka. There are a few in the Meguiars range.

But once you have polished a car, you then need to protect that paint with either a wax or sealant. I suspect these are what you are referring to?

I once conducted a wax test using about 20 different waxes. There was a difference in their performance. Some were difficult to wipe off, others left residue in crevices and some left a better shine than others. My value for money favourite is called DP MaxWax which performed well in every way and only costs about $40. No1. favourite is called Wolfgang Fuzion Estate Wax which is also made in the USA and costs about $175.
See this Link -
http://www.autogeek.net/wolfgang-fuzion-carnauba-polymer-car-wax.html

Some people prefer a Sealant to a Wax. My favourite is ChemGuys Jetseal109. Gives a superb shine.
Link -
http://www.chemguys.com.au/Auto_Detailing_Resin_Paint_Sealant_JetSeal_109_p/wac_118_16.htm

If you are fussy about maintaining your nice, shiny paint - it is necessary to use a good quality washing detergent. My no1. is ChemGuys Citrus Wash & Gloss used together with a Chenille or Microfibre Mitt.
Link -
   http://www.chemguys.com.au/Premium_Car_Wash_Shampoo_p/cws_301_16.htm

Unfortunately, this subject bores the shyte out of most people. It is not an easy job to keep that paintwork in pristine condition. For those interested, here is a Link to a US detailing forum
http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/

I buy a lot of car cleaning gear from Autogeek. Prices are excellent and if you specify shipping via US Postal Service, then shipping prices are reasonable.

Great info Rocket!

Out of curiosity, do you have any experience with Autoglym HD Wax? A detailer mate that deals in high end cars recommended it to me. I'm really impressed with the finish it gave me. Pretty pricey in Australia ($130 for a small tub) but managed to buy from the UK for $75 all up.
I'd be interested in how it compares to the products you've mentioned.

Hi guys, I am pleasantly surprised by the responses in this thread. Maybe there is a lot of interest in this subject afterall.

Evan, Yes - The Autoglym HD Wax was certainly in my top ten. From memory it was very easy to apply, wiped off with very minimal resistance and did not leave any residue behind. My one criticism was that it did require a second buffing with the microfibre cloth because it left the surface a little hazy after the first attempt. Very minor though. It really did leave an excellent shine - particularly on red paint. Here is a review of the HD Wax -

http://www.autopia.org/forum/car-detailing/106308-results-after-autoglym-hd-wax.html

There were other impressive Waxes like Pinnacle, P21S, Collinite etc. Here is a Link to a few more Waxes from the Autogeek site. Scroll down to the bottom to see them -
http://www.autogeek.net/qude101.html

In the first post i neglected to mention Automotive Clay, which is used before polishing to clean oxidised paint. This is a very important step in the process. First you wash the car, then you simply break a piece off the clay bar, knead it in your hands and then squeeze it to form a sort of disc about the size of a 50cent piece.
Then you spray a bit of lubricant on the paint before rubbing the clay across the surface. The clay will lift out the impurities from the paint and leave a very smooth surface ready for polishing. To determine whether your paint needs claying, wipe your flat hand across the paintwork. If the paint feels coarse/rough - It needs a good claying. Here is a Link to a good quality clay bar -
http://www.chemguys.com.au/Gray_Light_Duty_209_Gram_Auto_Detail_Clay_Bar_p/cly_kit_2.htm

I am going to give the Grande a polish next week in preparation for the summer. Will take lots of photos and show the process on this thread if it is ok with Glenn.

By the way, for those who saw Dales 66 Hertz at the Roundup last year. His car received a 2 step Menzerna polish before we gave the car back to him. There were many comments on how good his car looks. Also, there was a Car Detailer Mustang owner at the Roundup who also won several awards. It is worth the effort to polish your car.

great preparation can't be beat though when detailing a car!

A couple of weeks back we had a car show that involved a hour & half drive to get there.
The day before I spent 5 hours just on the outside of the car to get it ready .
1......wash and clean etc
2......chamois
3......dry
4......clay
5......polish
6......seal
then the next day on the way to the show it rained....  :ouch: .go figure, needless to say the car now had road grime all over it from the wet roads.....
A quick spray and wipe with the Zaino grand finale sealer  http://www.zainobros.com.au/prod12.htm
and it looked just like before.

After speaking with Rod and having him show me how good the flex polisher is I purchased my own. I got the export version (230 V) from the Tool King website in the US and had it delivered. It works great, just need an adapter for your socket which I got from Big W.

Rocket,

You're spot on about Autoglym HD Wax leaving a haze behind. The first time I applied it, I used waaaaay too much & the haze drove me nuts for weeks. I had to keep buffing with a microfibre. That aside, it's an amazing product. I re-applied a couple of weeks ago & it really made the red paint pop!

Excellent info! I use the Menzerna products, which are really good. What I don't understand is this clay bar business, as I have not used this before. Why not just DA with a fine polish and then seal/wax again.

Cheers

Hi Raven, I had the same opinion that the Clay was not necessary. Then i saw some Clay when in Supercheap one day and decided what the heck - i would give it a go. After washing the car i followed the directions. Spray a bit of the Lube on the panel, break a piece of clay off the bar, knead it and then make a small disc out of it. Soon as i started rubbing it on the paint i could actually feel it pulling the impurities out of the paint. The panel became very smooth, very quickly. Only took about half an hour to go around the whole car.
Next i washed and dried the car ready for buffing with the Flex and Menzerna. Because the paint surface was so smooth, it made it easier and quicker to buff each panel. Wish i had used the clay previously.
The Flex Polisher is a fantastic, purpose built polishing machine - but it is slow work to go around a car. It usually takes about 15 hours per car to do a 3 stage Menzerna polish. I was able to cut it down to about 12 hours after using the clay. So well worth it in my opinion.

I had also bought another polishing machine - a rotary buffer called the Festool Shinex which receives excellent reviews on the Detailing Forums, but our panel beater at the time ( Andy ), started using it to smooth off his body filler repairs. He had realised how light and easy to use the Festool is. Bugger! Think i managed to use it to polish half a car. It cost about $700. Should have kept it at home! Once the body filler dust became encrusted around the machine - it was no longer any good to polish cars. So now i will just stick with the trusty Flex machine.

What sort of machine do you use? What is your favourite Wax/Sealant?

Hi Dale, I think the reason a lot of people do not want to know about this process is the fact it takes about 5 hours to prepare a car. Us Ted Bullpitt types are happy to do it, but with the busy lifestyles we all lead - i think most people would not spare the time.

I have read a lot of Threads where users rave about the Zaino Sealant, but have never seen it in the flesh so to speak. Must catch up soon and check it out on your Hertz.

Evan, Good advice there about applying waxes. Less is more! You have to get a very thin layer. I do it by using an applicator, wipe it in the wax, then dab it on the panel before spreading as thinly as possible. Agree that it is an amazing product.

Hi Mark, Thanks for putting up that Link. It shows the price as $398 AU. How much was the Shipping cost?
Compares favourably against buying here in Australia. Last time i checked they cost about $850 here.

Hope you are getting good use out of your Flex.

Where are you buying the Menzerna Polishes? I need to get some fresh stocks, but not sure where to buy it now at a good price.

Hi Rod,

I was fortunate to buy my flex polisher when the dollar was at $1.09 so I got it for a total of $360 plus $53 shipping.

I bought my Menzerna polishes from Waxit.

On another note - at the MOCA meeting tonight your number was pulled out in the member's draw but you wern't there. However, Jeremy won a bottle of wine (just in case he dosn't tell you).
