Tyre size advice for a 1970
« on: June 27, 2012, 07:17:44 pm »
I'm looking to upgrade the 15" magnums to the 17" American racing ar500. I've gotten the following sizes
17x8 (4.5" backspace, 0 offset)
17x9.5 (5" backspace, 0 offset)
I'm running 245/45/17 fr and 275/40/17 rr.
I'll have to investigate lowering but it won't be ultra low so rubbing shouldn't be an issue.
Does anyone have experience or input with what I've come up with, seem right?

17 by 8 front is very wide and with 245s may look good but may track ,think 7s and 225s would be the go ,but thats what i think .I have 17 by 7 and 225/45 on my 70 mach 1 . The back should be ok if its not to low ,sometimes if low the tyres will hit the lump inside the RHS wheel arch where the spare wheel goes in trunk .

I don't think you will have clearance issues, however, I'd suck back the tyres on the front to 225's.  If you've already bought the rims at 8" there is no problem in stretching the rubber across, but I think they may be a little too tall on the front at full lock.

Mate of mine on a 69 (I'd say same arches) runs 18x7 on the front with 225's and 18x10 on the back with 295's.  Sits on full RRS setup so very low and no clearance issues - rolled guards but no pumping required.
