Customs Exemptions
« on: June 27, 2007, 05:22:20 pm »
Hey,

I have a bunch of stuff (mostly repro parts for a 65 coupe)
ariving to Sydney soon. I want to do the customs clearance myself, unless it becomes too difficult...
Through my research on the customs website I have found that most things imported from the US that are parts for cars over 30 years old (or repros of same) are duty free, I think so anyway I am not entirely sure as it doesnt seem too clear.
I have an interior, a set of wheels, steering parts etc etc.
Has anybody had any experience with this and am I right in saying that these items are in fact duty free to import?

Any advice would be appreciated...

Thanks Guys,

James.

From my understanding imports up to a certain value are ok. Don't know what the $$ value of that is maybe others have more on that.
Cheers JD.

I simply meant that I didn;t know the amount of value of the imported parts before customs duty and or gst were payable.

Thanks for the input so far Guys...

Just to be a bit clearer, It was my understanding that there is a trade agreement exculsively with the US for certain things (parts for cars over 30 years being one of them) that are duty free no matter what the amount. It is in section 8571 or something like that (i dont have the peice of paper in front of me to give exact number).  A customs broker I rang said that most of it should qualify for this tax free status.

Has anyone else had experience with this.
Maybe it would be cheaper in the long run to just use a broker???

Any comments welcome...

I regularly import parts from the USA

Most mechanical parts are duty or tariff free

All imports attract GST based on the invoice value , if the Value is under $1000 then you get exemption. But if they see multiple imports over a period of time they will ping you.

Kinda nasty paying GST on parts from the US ,but that's the govt for you :]
