G'day Mature Gent, Friday April 17 1964 was sales day one.
Hence the 1/2.

See if you can get your hands on "Mustang Recognition Guide 1965 - 1973" interesting reading!!
SALUTE!!  To those who have given their lives doing their job.

Hi Steven
I reality Mustangs were produced as a 1965 model onwards. Normally the new year model of cars produced in the US were released around September of the previous year but Ford decided to release the Mustang in April. They then made some changes to the line up in September like dropping the 170ci and 260ci engines. All Mustangs produced up to September 1965 were 1965 year models. To distinguish between the cars produced before September 1964 and those produced after, Mustang enthusiasts refer to the earlier cars as 1964 1/2.

Regards
Kerry

The recognition guide is great for this question. The differences between 64.5 and 65 is quite alot.

The front nose of the early cars is subtly different, and the hoods are different. The horns are different, the early cars have generators instead of alternaters, and this includes a different dash light (gen vs alt) the 64.5 had only coupes and convertables. 65 was the start of the fastback... The early cars had different power steering and disc brakes to the later cars I think too. Some engine codes changed between the years too.

Many many differences, but no real advantage or disadvantage as far as value goes. Its worth whatever you are willing to pay for it.

:agree:

However, there has been a tiny handful of cars that were infact stamped with a 4 as the first number of the VIN...

Factory mistakes...

(EDIT: But true, no actual 64 'model' exists... just throwing a bit of trivia out there.)
