Rust Removal in 14 Hours !!
« on: February 13, 2011, 04:37:27 pm »
Thought I'd share the results of removing rust with Evaporust. These seat frames were soaking for 14 hours, pressure cleaned then dried with compressed air. Paint in good condition and no rust under it is not removed.
Heavy scaly rust can be removed in three days!

I'm impressed!
What do you do, set it up in a bath?

Yes, I have various sizes of plastic barrels and trays. Try to use just enough liquid for the job.
Good steel is not harmed, it just eats rust. In some conditions I have seen shiny steel in 20 minutes.
The part should be totally immersed. You could do half at one time but that leaves a mark and some corrosion at water level where the clean end is exposed while cleaning the other end.

Don't know what the secret ingredient is, wish I knew, molasses is $$$ cheaper!
I used a molasses bath for three years with good results, stopped using it cause the smell is a bit on the nose! and I'm allergic to mould that grows on top of the mix. Also molasses must be thoroughly cleaned from the job after the rust is removed or it will cause rusting later. Seen steel tube corroded from the inside from molasses residue inside.

We use similar stuff at my work. As I work on ships and barges, everything get rusty, from forklifts to frontend loaders. I use that stuff with alot of small components that are too small to sand blast. I've got a 302 Mexican block that I might use it on. I dilute the stuff at my work 4:1 (4 parts water and 1 part dissolver) and it still works a treat.

Hopefully it won't dissolve the Mexican block! Haha

Reminds me of a story at my work years and years ago. An employee bought into work the exhaust pipe of his motorbike and gave it to the bloke working in our electroplating section to get the rust removed. Not sure what process was used (some kind of reverse electrolysis I think), but the electro-plater forgot to take it out before going home on the weekend. Came back on the Monday, lifted the hook out of the tank and found nothing on the end of it. Exhaust pipe completely dissolved like it never existed in the first place. Motor bike guy - yeah not so happy.
