Cam Upgrade?
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:23:23 pm »
Hi All,

Just wondering if a cam upgrade is a good power upgrade option for minimal cost? i am after that rougher idle with abit more performance. I have a 289, edlebrock manifold ,edlebrock carby, extractors, pertronix ignition, stock cam will i notice the difference of a slightly mild cam as i dont want to put in a stall convertor. 67 coupe

Cheers

check with others with 289's whether the stock heads will become a bottleneck...

Comp cams do a repro of the 289 hipo factory cams in solid and hydrulic, they call them Nostalga + or something like that.

Hi fatso1,

Try contacting Malcom from Camtech is Sydney - (02) 9755 3101.

As JimNiki metioned, you're going to be limited with your stock 289 heads, plus your diff ratio.

Try a cam in the 1200 - 4500 RPM range and you may need to upgrade your valve springs to accomodate the extra lift and duration.

Camtech has a reasonably good grind (Part No. 522) with 250 (inlet duration) and 266 (outlet duration) with 460" (inlet lift) and 476" (outlet lift) with 1.6 Ratio Rockers. The longer duration and higher lift on the exhaust valve will help to scavange the exhaust from an un-ported (standard) exhaust port.

The most important aspect is, to keep the piston to valve clearance in check when uprating your cam, as well as the correct rocker to push rod geometery. Compression ratio is also often overlooked...

Either way, talk to a camshaft manufacturer or specialist and tell them what you want from your engine?

Hope this helps...

Cheers,

Trans-Am:cool:

Thanks for all the info guys.

Will this be a noticable improvement to my engine if i use one of these cams or is it a waste of time as i have stock heads etc.

If you just want the nice burble for your cruiser without pushing it hard, you can go just the cam, no probs...
but you won't do 13's without heads and good diff ratio.

289 K code hipo engines have a 4 barrel, a cam, compression, heads have the same size ports valves, and cast iron headers  they have about 280 hp, rather than 200 for a 2 barrel 289. So yeah you will, particulary if you go for a cam the works in the mid range. You can compensate for the small exhaust ports with extra duration on the exhaust cam profile, no big deal.
GT350 Shelby's use the same heads.

Your best bet would be go with a Comp Cam's "Thumper". You will get the sound and performance you want. You could go to Comp direct online or Performance W/sale in Brisbane and tell them your engine stats and let them pick the best cam to suit.

Good  luck in choosing. Forgot to mention ,performance definetly improved .

Hey Mate did you also replace lifters, valve springs, timing chain?
I just got a price from a guy quoted me $1800-$2000 that is new cam, chain and valve springs, lifters and installed?

Are all the above nessecary?

Do these cams have to be dialled in?

Cheers

Yes you always need new lifters, if the chain age is unknown change with double row, unit with adjustable sprokets, springs depend on thecam you buy, but most high lift cams will need them. and yes set it up on the factory marks and then check with a degree wheel. You can advance the cam if you want which will give it more down low and mid range.
