Steering coupling help
« on: August 03, 2010, 06:10:03 pm »
Hi guys i just removed my steering column to start fitting up the flaming river column i have but the coupling fell apart when i undid it.
The  coupling kits i can see on line all have 4 bolts the 1 that came out only had 2 and the other side looks like it was riveted in place.
Do i just drill out the rivets and put the bolts in or is there a different kit i can get. oh and its a xf steering box.
Cheers
Craig
PS: glad i found this would hate to know what would have happened if the rubber had fallen out while i was driving

Craig,
hard to say what your on about, but i will hazard a guess.

I am assuming you are talking about the insulator between the steering box and steering shaft. ?

Compare the pic in this link:-

http://www.jasonpigdon.com/storage/Budgies196.jpg

If so, there should be 2 pins, one large and one small.  Then two special bolts, with special washers in place.  Hard to describe, but once you know what you're looking at........

If I have guessed you correctly, go take  a look at the installation on and XF at the wreckers.  You will see the special bolts etc.  Probably wise to get them while you are there :)

Hope this helps
Jas

If you need a new coupling, there is guy here in Melbourne who has the Bergeson ones. About $160 from memory.

U2U me if you need his details and I will find them.

Frank,

Yeah, I thought it was a bit steep which is why I didn't get one yet.

But even in the US , the Borgeson ones are US $100.

Thanks for that.

Cheers,
Frank.

The Scott Drake are not spot on for XF.
I personally chased a good second hand XF one.

This may help..

OK i ended up getting the Nolathane kit and drilling off the heads of the rivets and then used a punch to push the pins out. I had checked with bursons and the company that used to make the original style replacement coupling stopped making them about 3 years ago.
They tryed to see if someone had some old stock still but no joy.
Steering feels much better now but that could be more to do with the flaming river column than the coupling. The top bush and the bottom bearing where both stuffed in the original column.

I seem to recall not long ago a couple of the guys here recommending against Nolathane ... you may want to do a search.

I think the reason is that when they fail they fail suddenly and catastrophically - whereas the rubber ones dont.

Cheers,
Frank.

You may want to search urethane instead of Nolathane  though....

Pretty much the same thing , no ?

Frank.

Nolathane is just a brand i believe - I definitely remember Kerry specifically advising removing all urethane rag joints asap, not my advice, but anything from the master must be good!!!
