Don't laugh, but in my haste I connected the positive and the negative ends of my trickle charger on the wrong battery terminals and after not turning it over for about 3 weeks  car wont start just makes a horrible grinding noise, I have lights  and  radio works,

Is the solenoid making the noise, or the starter motor? I would suggest that there was a meltdown somewhere. You battery is probably flat, too, and past the point of recovery.

Your charger should have reverse polarity protection. Over the last 3 weeks I would expect no charging. If anything would have died it would be the charger in a puff of smoke. Charge the battery with a normal charger and I bet your charger will still work too.

I agree, unless the battery charger was Noah's it should be protected.

Yep, connect it the correct way and give the battery a good charge.
