looking to buy, need advice
« on: May 01, 2010, 11:07:11 am »
Hi all, Im new too the site,
Im looking to buy a 67/68 fastback(anyone whos sellin let me know)
My question is If I buy a matching Nos car in either a "C" code or "A" code 289 or even a 68 "J "code 302 and work the motor, will this depreciate the car at all??

And Can ya really get a Better and much cheaper car from the states?

Any help would be appreciated.

You can maybe do better ex USA if you are prepared to do heaps of work and checking!
Do not EVER take the word of "unknown" people purporting to sell you a "bargain".
I would exhaust all local offerings and then maybe consider some of the expat Aussies that offer cars on this forum.
IMO if you're going for a F/B get at least an A-code.
Where are you from? Good luck.:(

Personally, as long as you don’t explode the block then it shouldn’t make much difference. There is different aspects of collectability with these cars (the collectability is what gives it the value).

In your case the most collectable aspect of your car is the fastback as there was around 13000 67 A codes fastbacks and around 30000 67 C code fastbacks made. So i guess the most damaging thing you could do to the value of your car is turn it into a coupe.

There is two paths with these cars. Original and modified. Original is when you care about numbers matching etc. Modified is where you do whatever you want.

My advice is choose a path and then stick to it...that way when it comes to making decisions, most of the time they are already made for you.

As for the USA vs Local battle there is plenty of threads on here discussing it.

Thanks lee,
The hardest decision is deciding which way to go.
I wanted something collectable but I wouldnt be able to put up with some thing stock standard, i will get bored quickly,
I need something that looks and sounds like a muscle car without going over top.

Thanks for your input to Igalop
Im in Sydney

alternatively, put the original engine to the side and pick up another engine, build it as big and loud as you want - with the option of easily putting the original engine in if you ever wish to sell it..much more cost effective than blowing your original motor then trying to find another one!!

Ive done both , bought my vert here 4 years ago , i wasn't looking for numbers matching , i wanted restomod , when i saw the vert with all the rrs gear 351w motor and was restored here that was it bugger overseas i made a offer and he excepted , the doller was low at the time and i wasn't going to save anything by buying overseas , my wifes car 1955 oldsmobile we had to buy in the US as you just can not find one here and we just didn't want to be the norm and buy a chev , in that case we used a forum member on this site that lives there to inspect , purchase and ship for us. this will cost you more but well worth it , so i would definatly look here first as peoples circumstances change and have to sell , i think its a buyers market at the moment and a good deal can be done here.
cheers chris.

What about the difference between auto and Manual..which is more likely to be better resale in the future?

Manual's get my vote because they are not as common, and I drove a manual '67 as my daily for a couple of years.  But it comes down to your preference.  Do you like autos or manuals?

As for matching numbers cars - they are nice if the rest of the car is also unmolested.

Oh, and stay away from red.  Too many red mustangs :[
There are lots of colours out there, may as well go for some of the awesome factory colours!

It is the nature of this forum;  one comment can cause the discussion to go off topic.

Anyway - back to Disco's search for a non red 67-8 fastback... :(

X 3. Go the red mustangs!!!

And Disco, as been said above, if you buy from the US, use a trusted inspector/agent.
Dont go on the word of the seller!!!

The 2K approx fee could save you 2K in rusty resto's.
If you buy from OZ, have someone in the know check it out first.

Mo makes a good point
Auto/Manual, Matching/not matching..
Buying the car for you/buying the car as an investment..
there is almost* always going to be a toss up between what you want and what you forsee as being worth more when it comes to selling it (if you buy one you really love will you want to sell it?)..
Buy a car that is clean, is mechanically sound and has a straight, unmolestered body..it will owe you less because you will spend less on it, therefore you will most likely make more money when it comes to resale!!
