    Hi all,

Looking for some advice. I’m getting my 1969 Mustang restored and the engine rebuilt.

The rebuild will be high 400 hp and it is being recommended to upgrade the C4 auto shift with a heavy duty clutch and a shift kit. I’m torn with a more traditional look and enjoying the drive more with the ability to have auto and manual shift.

The engine has already been modified with efi etc.

Could I get peoples views on having a shift kit and what others would choose?

    Thanks

    Hi Glen.

The shift kit and heavy duty clutches won’t change the look of the gearbox. It’s an internal upgrade to handle more power and give you crisper shifts. The C4 will still operate in the same way. To have full manual only control you would need a fully Manualised valve body. Cheers.

With high 400hp a properly built C4 with upgraded clutches/bands and a mild street shift kit is a solid choice and helps it live longer. I would avoid the super harsh/full manual style for a street car, but a good builder can keep it feeling nice while still strong. You can also keep the stock shifter for the classic look and just upgrade the internals.
